• The Melt

Happy to announce that we have both passed the knowledge test and will have our Alaskan licenses in 2 to 3 weeks. We also switched our vehicle registration and have Alaskan plates. Super excited to have that taken care of.

    Getting the front plate set

The snow has really started to melt now. But instead of just seeping into the ground it puddles. There is still a layer of frost that doesn’t let for the melt to seep. So now we have a river through our driveway. And it isn’t just at our place it is everywhere. Water puddles everywhere. So much water. But now we can see most of the cabin and the area around it.

    Water front property

At the end of the week, we experienced rain up here for the first time. The rain is different than up here. It doesn’t rain as heavily or as long. As you drive it can be raining and you see the line of rain coming from the clouds and then you aren’t in the rain anymore. The rain had a different smell when it is finished. A very fresh smell. The rain is nice except it makes the puddles so much larger.

    Moose

As everything warms up, the animals are coming out a lot more. It is fairly normal that see moose right along side the road. It is still really strange to see the moose on the roadside. They are so big. Slightly terrifying to be driving down the road and see them right there. Very difficult to not want to freak out while driving.

    Grilling Sunday Lunch

On the weekends we have been enjoying the routine of grocery shopping and hanging out with friends in the evenings. We tried a Mexican restaurant that wasn’t very good. But had good company so that made it better. We always have an amazing time hanging out with friends. And then on Sunday we enjoy cooking lunch together and relaxing for the rest of the day.

This past week has been one of a lot of snow melt. Just for the chance of snow this week. We shall see what this week holds and if we go on any new adventures. Love the Kreiders.

  • Month One!

We made it a month of living in our little cabin in the North Pole. We can’t wait for the months to come in this little space as we make it our own and make memories that will last a lifetime. The craziest part about this month has been how quickly the snow has been melting. It isn’t all gone yet but it really is melting. Our driveway has quite a few puddles. Always wearing my xtratuffs to leave the house just to make it to the truck.

This week we didn’t get around to going back to take the knowledge test for our Alaskan licenses, so I have no updates for that. Hoping to get it done on Monday. We have learned some interesting facts while studying for the test.

    Somewhere in Canada

This week was bit of a slow one which is always nice when getting use to a new place. I can for the most part confidently get around to the important places in Fairbanks. With Benjamin not driving all the time he has picked up quickly where everything is as well. He doesn’t drive as much I keep the truck in case I need to go into Fairbanks or North Pole. It’s easy when Walmart, Old Navy, Lowes, Home Depot and the Sportsman Warehouse are all on the same road/strip. And Costco isn’t far from them.

This week we went to another pizza/game night. Always fun to spend time with new friends and enjoying our time together. We all can’t wait for the puddles to disappear so we can spend our time outside with a fire going and playing Spike Ball! Super excited for Summer to be here. Spending time outside and with friends. Right now, if you were to walk outside at 11pm it is still light outside. We shall see how sleeping goes over in the next couple months with it being light all day.

Friday night was date night! Always my favorite day. When we were out last year, we went to a Thai restaurant in Fairbanks called Bahn Thai. Ever since we got here, I have been asking Benjamin if we can go. We finally went on Friday. I love their Thai Iced Coffee. After dinner we made it home and watched She’s the Man. If you want a cringe worthy 2006 movie that is one to watch. We both just sat there like are we really watching this.

    Cheesin’

Saturday morning has been the time that we go grocery shopping and any other errands that need to be taken care of. We have found that going to Costco for our big-ticket items is the cheapest option. This week we didn’t have to go there. So, we went to Fred Myer. This week was a more expensive trip. We left our really nice grill with a friend in Pennsylvania, so we are grill less. Benjamin has missed grilling. So, we purchased a small round Weber charcoal grill. Super nice to have and plan to take it with if we ever want to grill when out fishing. Also, the perfect size for camping or picnics.

After errands we, well Benjamin, replaced our toilet. This week I noticed that right at the bottom our toilet was leaking and there was a hairline crack. Benjamin let the Landlord/his boss know. He got us a new toilet and Benjamin installed it on his own. I was very impressed with him. Now have a new toilet with no leaks.

    Mr. Fix It

For Christmas this past year Benjamin got me a really nice camera. I used it a little back in PA and on our way out. That was a little difficult since we didn’t have the time to stop. I tried my best to take the picture through the truck window. Some turned out really nice. I have started to edit those. Saturday afternoon, we drove up the Steese Highway for me to take some pictures and really get to test out the camera. The beauty up that road is amazing. In total we drove about 4 hours. We finished just in time to meet up with friends to go to the movies. We all went to watch The Northman. It is weird to go to the movies at 6pm be leaving at 9pm and it is still light out. Probably won’t get use to that feeling.

    Steese Highway Drive

We have been attending True North Church with our friends Cade and Nicole since we arrived. This church has been amazing with helping to feel at peace and finding a community to be a part of. What stuck out to us the most is how much the staff and pastors make you feel like you are part of the church. The first Sunday we were introduced to the pastor of the one campus, and he explained what the church has to offer and how to get plugged in. Then the very next week we were introduced to the lead pastor at the other campus. This very much helped us. Super excited to see what God has in store for both of us here and how we will plug in with this church.

This week we plan to pass the knowledge test and start the process to get our Alaskan licenses so then we can register our vehicle to get Alaskan plates. We will see how much the snow melts this week as we continue with the warm weather. The warm weather is different from PA. Not as windy so with being high 50’s you can wear sandals no problem and spend the day in a T-shirt. Also hoping to get our fishing licenses to spend some time at the rivers. Maybe I will manage to get the fish off the hook myself. Still can’t do that without freaking out a little. See you all next week, with lots of the love the Kreiders!

  • Settling In…

Welcome to another weekly update. This week is three weeks of living in Alaska. Which is a lot different than Pennsylvania. A lot slower pace of life. It is very refreshing to take a step back and just enough the moment and not worry about what is next.

For Easter lunch was spent with friends and made some new ones as well. It was wonderful to fellowship with friends. Spent a lot of time with friends. Enjoying each moment. Spent our time listening to stories from those who have been in the area for years. Also played games with the children.

During the week, we finally put-up pictures. Now the house feels like a home. That was the last item to do before the house was complete. Minus needing to update a few of the pictures. The house is no longer a big mess like it had been while we tried to figure out what went where. Was hard to do but figured out what we need and what can be put in the storage unit. Feels nice to make this place more like home.

Throughout this week the temperatures have been rising. With the rising temperatures, means that the snow is melting. In turn the snow on the roof has fallen off. Not a fun time being in the house when there is a loud crash and the house shakes. I mean the entire house shakes when the snow falls off. First was our neighbors house but then ours was next. I didn’t enjoy that but also nice to see the roof. The snow has melted at a fast rate. Means there is a lot of pooling on the roads and parking lots. Lot of driving through standing water. We went through one road that could have been a river. Now most of the snow packed roads are the actual dirt roads. Also starting to see the grass for the first time.

We had the truck serviced this week. Originally only went in for an oil change and tire rotation. Soon found out that our back breaks need replaced. We chalked this up to pulling the trailer from PA to AK. So the very next day I returned to that shop and within two hours we had new back breaks. Now everything is smooth sailing.

One thing about moving to Alaska, is that within a certain timeframe we need to change our license to from Pennsylvania to Alaska. To do this we need to take a test. Similar to the written test needed to get a learners permit in PA. This test is also a lot different than that one. More questions on insurance and road knowledge. We went on Saturday morning before running our errands to try an obtain our new licenses. From Benjamin’s coworkers we have found out that this test isn’t the easiest. We didn’t think much of it since we have taken a road knowledge test before. We were very wrong. That test is difficult. We both failed. We now have to wait 24 hours before taking it again. But since we went on the last workday we will wait till Monday to try again. This time we will prepare more.

To make our day a little better we decided to try out a coffee shop. There are coffee shops/huts all over the place. Seems like Alaska runs off coffee. This time we tried Buckos. Really good coffee. If one ever finds themself in Fairbanks, they should try Buckos. We continued the day with running to the laundry mat, because we still don’t have a washer and dryer, also made our way to the grocery store. We have learned to go to Costco for bigger items and then Fred Myer for the rest of our groceries. Fred Myer is a Kroger store so we still have access to Turkey Hill ice cream. Which if you are from Pennsylvania you know how important that is.

    Bucko’s Coffee

To finish out our weekend we went to an ice hockey game. Fairbanks has a junior league team. It was a very good game. First game we have been too in a very long time. Forgot how much we enjoyed watching ice hockey. The Ice Dogs ended up winning the game 7 to 1. They played a team from Minnesota. It was the second game of the weekend. By the time the game was over it was still light out at 10:30pm. Very strange feeling to walk outside expecting it to be dark and in turn it is light.

The longer we have been here the more daylight there is. this has messed with our sense of time. We will be sitting out home enjoying our evening and the sunshine. We finally decide to look at the clock and it is 10pm. Then we are scrambling to get ready for bed, but it is still really bright in our bedroom. To stop the light from shinning in as much i made homemade black out curtains. Mostly due to the cost of curtains here and wanting to find a cheaper alternative. So, I spent the week finding what material would work best and came up with a idea of how to make it all work. Wasn’t super confident in my sewing abilities just because I just really starting sewing. But I made something that worked. Worked so well that Benjamin slept in for the first time in awhile. With our bedroom door shut our room is pitch black. Now we are ready for the sunshine all day long. Well at least in our bedroom. If it becomes too much for the living room, I can make another one.

    Homemade Curtain

This week we attempt to obtain our Alaskan license. Come back next week to find out if we passed and what other adventures we go on. This week will be a month of living in Alaska and adjusting to it all. See you all next week.

  • Happy Easter!

Made it through another week. This week the snow is really starting to melt. We are quickly learning how to drive on the roads that are kinda still ice but also slush. Really trying not to get stuck. Usually the next day, getting to the truck means don’t lift your feet unless you want a potential broken tailbone.

We are starting to get in a rhythm of how each day runs, with internet now. It is gonna take some time since we still want to keep doing things at 9pm since it is light. The more light during the day can mess with your perception of time. Even though Benjamin is usually done with work by 5 we don’t eat till 7. Which doesn’t even feel late so we don’t think twice about it. Summers are going to be a lot of fun just hanging out till the wee hours of the night.

Speaking of hanging out, we have gotten to make a couple friends which we have a blast with. Going home late on a weeknight and then right before Sunday makes the next day interesting. But we enjoy each moment of getting to know some awesome people.

    Easter Basket from PA

Throughout the week we got packages. But since our mailbox isn’t big they didn’t fit and we get notes to go to the post office. Saturday we learned where the post office is located. Our post office is in the back of the local liquor/convenience store. Not where most are at. We also became adults this week with the purchase of a Costco membership. Might have done it for samples and for the cheap gas prices.

We have really been enjoying life right now. Can’t wait till the snow is all gone and the weather warms up. Lots of exploring to do. See you all next week!

    Happy Easter!
  • Organized Chaos

We made it through our first week living in Alaska. Still doesn’t feel like we are living here. Feels like we are on a long vacation. As we adjust to the lifestyle it is really starting to feel like home.

We got the trailer completely unpacked on Friday and returned it. The house look like a wreck. Boxes everywhere, things in places that don’t make sense. Thankfully we have a storage unit with the cabin to put items that don’t fit in the space. As we figured out the best place for items it has really started to feel like a home. Now just to make sure we keep it clean.

    Before…

Took lots of patience to find out where everything belongs and how it will fit. Lots of time was spent and about 3 Walmart trips to get items we forgot. Walmart is always busy. Even during the middle of the week.

    First dinner out!

Sunday we visited a church that we enjoyed greatly. Felt just like the living room where we met. Was nice to get plugged into a church right away. Everyone was very nice and friendly. Today we went to the same church again just a different campus. We enjoyed it again.

This week was spent trying to figure out where everything is and learning to get there without the GPS. I can now successfully get to Benjamin’s work and home without the GPS. That’s about it. Still needs pull everything else up on the GPS. But eventually will get everywhere else figured out.

We also are figuring out what grocery store we go to. Groceries are a little more expensive than back in Pennsylvania so we are making sure we use everything we buy and only buy what we need. Gonna get creative with cooking. So far only had Benjamin complain about one meal I made in our 2 years of marriage but it’s okay because I didn’t like it either.

    First dinner in our home

We currently do not have a washer and dryer in our home so we go to the laundry mat. I can successfully do laundry at the laundry mat. Also spent a good amount of time trying to figure out internet for our home. At this point we still do not have internet. Hoping to have that figured out this week.

By the end of the week, we still don’t have the house fully the way we want but that will come with time. Hoping to get more familiar with the area this week and spend time with friends we made so far and new ones as well. Beyond thankful for all the love and support with the blog. Hope everyone has a good week and see you back on Easter Sunday.

  • March 31

I apologize for not getting this out yesterday. We have been up to our eyeballs unpacking and making our home ours. With not wanting to make you wait any longer our travels for Thursday March 31st.

Getting Ready to Hit the Road

We started our last day of travel bright at early. Before the sun was up we were on the road. The darkness is different than back in PA. There is no light from towns or street lights. A serene kind of dark.

As we continued to drive, you could see different road signs. There was one that said, Caution Snow Plow Turn Around. The snow started to come down more steadily and it felt like we were in star wars traveling at light speed. The people who drive in the snow regularly, drive like it is no problem at all. Passing us no problem, if they only knew what type of weather we drive in they would be impressed we could drive well.

    Mountains for Days

With mountains on either side of us as we drive it makes you realize how small you are in the world. Really helps to put everything into perspective. The mountains continue to climb up next to us. Peaks barely visible in the distance. With a view of them that keeps getting more spectacular as we drive.

The weather continues to get warmer and warmer as the day continues. Almost no clouds in the sky. The sky is a beautiful blue like nothing I have seen before. Seeing God’s creation is breath taking. So glad we got to see so much of it in a short amount of time. Had a quick pit stop in Haines Junction. Once past Haines Junction we saw two red foxes and one gray one. Pretty much the only wild life we saw.

For a period of time there was nobody on the road. It was just us and the road. But then there were gravel spots and paved spots. Every time we reached gravel we prayed that we didn’t get another flat tire. We made it through without any other tire casualties. Especially as we got closer to the border the road got worse.

12:30 we stopped in the last town, Beaver Creek, in Canada before the border. Only 19 miles till we reach Alaska! Once we reached the Canadian Border we were worried that the process would be long. But it was the opposite. We walked in to the office to return our paperwork. The officer asked us “Checking out?” Felt like we were in a hotel. Handed over our paperwork, let the officer know our birthdays and were on our way. Super easy. Unlike getting into Canada.

By one o’clock we hit the Alaska Time Zone. Which meant it is now 12 o’clock. Four hours behind the East Coast. We were finally out of Canada and at the border. It took us 5 minutes to get through the border. Handed the officer our passports and he said all good to go. A lot less anxiety this time. Funny thing was that the covid tests required by Canada, we never got those results back before we left. Now we are in Alaska. One final stop North Pole!!

Had our first lunch in Alaska shortly after crossing the border. First pit stop was in Tok Alaska, the price of gas was $4.70 a gallon. Ouch! By 3:30 we hit under 100 miles. Yay! We continued on to Delta Junction. This is where the Alaskan highway ends and we jump on the Richardson Highway for almost the rest of the trip. At this stop gas was $4.98 per gallon. That one hurt a lot.

    Home Sweet Home

By 4pm we crossed into Fairbanks Borough. The last stretch of the trip. Passed by the Eielson Air Force Base. Where we live is between the Air Force Base and the Army Base. 5:10pm – We made it! We reached our new home. It was so nice to get out of the truck. Our awesome new friends, Cade and Nicole Kelley stopped by and helped us unload some of the trailer that night. Super thankful for them and their help. Now comes the creative part of getting everything to fit in our new home. 500 square feet isn’t a lot but we will get creative. First we got our room organized so we could sleep on our bed. Which was so nice. We finished the night by eating Cup of Noodles in bed. Crazy to think we were here almost a year ago on vacation and now we live her. God works in miraculous ways.

    Adventure Awaits

In total for the trip we drive 4,139 miles. That is a long time to be in a vehicle. We are excited to be in Alaska and to see what God has in store for us. For the blog my goal is to post weekly Sunday updates on life from the North Pole. See you on Sunday to hear about our unpacking chaos.

  • March 30

Bright and early this morning we hit the road. Well not right away, we needed coffee. So we went to the most Canadian place for coffee, Tim Hortons. Also got breakfast wraps which were the bomb.

    Tim Hortons

As we keep driving through Northern British Columbia the scenery really starts to change. A lot more snow on the ground than before and different animal signs along the road. One cool this is that they push the snow really far off the road so there is no change you can get stuck on the side. There is also a lot less cars on the road. Mainly tractor trailers and you only seem them sporadically.

Around 9:30 we entered the county of the Northern Rockies – opportunity at its peak. As we continue to drive we come up on several construction zones. It appears they doing storm water management. They brought out the big guns equipment wise.

    The Big Guns

Since everything is still snow covered and for the most part frozen, people take their snowmobiles right out onto the rivers. Well as people up here call them snow machines. As we go over bridges if you look out you can see the tracks from the snow machines in the snow. Our first pit stop of the day was in Fort Nelson, BC for a fuel up and bathroom break.

Now we keep on trucking! Those animal signs I mentioned earlier were mainly for deer and moose, we just saw one that said Bison on the highway. This could get interesting. Also just saw two cars with Alaska plates. We are getting so close.

As we keep driving, we get closer and closer to the Rockies. They are breath taking. No picture can do them justice. Totally worth a drink along the Alaksan Highway just to see the Canadian Rockies. The snow covered peaks with the green pines scattered across make it such a beautiful view. I think snow covered scenery is 10x prettier. Just my opinion.

    Canadian Rockies

Made another quick pit stop around lunchtime to fuel up and hit the bathroom. Those animal crossing signs were no joke. I was mid-bite on my fluffer nutter sandwich when Benjamin goes “Oh Shit” and hits the breaks. I look over and there are sheep on the road. They were big horn sheep, just standing in the middle of the road. As we got closer they got off and started walking up the steep mountain. Crazy how they can do thar no problem.

    Big Horn Sheep 🐑

Driving through the Rockies was like nothing either of us has done. Driving next to them was amazing as well. You look up on either side of you and it is just mountain. As we drove along the Rockies, we saw a moose and someone ice fishing on Muncho lake. Just like that we were out of the Rockies.

What’s crazy about the roads is that sometimes you see a sign along the road that says “No Road Lines” so you could take up the whole road as you drive. Which we did at some spots because it was just us and the road going around turns. The roads are also incredibly nice for how far north we are. We thought the roads would be gravel. Thank goodness they aren’t. Don’t need to have another tire fall victim to a stone.

After some time, there was a sign that said “Drive with caution. Bison next 90km”. All coming back to that Bison on highway sign. Well things did get interesting. I have never seen a wild Bison. As soon as I said something to Benjamin he said look across the bridge there is some. That was a herd of 5. Then there was a herd of 4 right on the side of the road. As we kept driving we saw even more. And not just little herds, massive herds spanning both sides of the road. The last herd we saw there was one standing on one side of the road acting like it wanted to cross. As it started to move as we got closer, it changed its mind and walked along the road right next to the truck. The Bison were cool to watch. Some were nose deep in the snow trying to get the grass underneath. Seemed like they were using their nose as shovels.

    Bison

At 3:50 we crossed into the Yukon or so we thought. We kept playing jump rope with the Yukon and British Columbia for awhile. As we drive there are these little, I mean very little town, more like rest areas along the highway. They usually have gas, motel and restaurant. A decent amount weren’t open so we had to time our gas stops just right. They do have signs saying check gas, x amount of kilometers till next open gas stop. One was called nugget city and had an RV park that is called baby nugget. This was the one of many that were closed. And they for sure closed, snow halfway up the doors.

As we continued to drive we encountered a small snow storm. Just a quick flurry mostly. Then it was sunny skies. Till it wasn’t. Hit another snow storm. We passed a big rig that was moving his hand back and forth in a it is okay motion. Not bad but not good. At first we weren’t sure what he meant. After getting through the storm we learned it was he probably meant we had a 50/50 shot of making it through the storm and not getting stuck. I am happy to report back we made it through just fine. Took it slow and threw the truck into 4 wheel drive. The second snow storm didn’t appear to be as intense as it was but it sure was intense. The temperature dropped from around 38 to 30 quickly, the roads became white. We did have something going for us. There was a vehicle in front of us so we had tire tracks to follow. Within 15 minutes we were through the storm. Now it was just sunny with flurries and the snow that was on the ground already started to melt. The temperature came back up and we took the truck out of 4 wheel drive.

    Snow Flurries

That entire time we were in the Yukon. Then we crossed back into Super Natural British Columbia for some time. The road here wasn’t as nice. Trying to dodge pot holes so we don’t have another trailer tire situation. Which we didn’t but we passed a single axel Uhaul trailer on the side of the road with a blown out tire. We passed that and found any wood in the truck and knocked it. We made it through that section with no tires blowing out, which is amazing cause we also didn’t have any service.

    Teslin View

By 7 pm we crossed back into the Yukon – Larger than Life. Our last province to drive through till the Alaskan Border! As we got closer to our stopping point the sun was peaking around the mountains to the left of us. It was just breath taking like everything else we have seen today. Within 30 minutes we made it to Teslin, Yukon were we spent the night at the Yukon Lodge. A cute small lodge with an amazing restaurant. Would eat there again. We meet the guy who had the uhaul trailer on the side of the road. He is traveling from Colorado to Anchorage Alaska. He said that was the second tire issue he had that day. Glad it wasn’t us! In total today we drove 707 miles. Tomorrow is Alaska or Bust!

  • March 29

So, remember those covid tests we had to take per Canada’s request. Well we tried to get everything scheduled on the site first thing when we woke up. That didn’t work. The site kept showing an error code. So I called the number listed and got everything scheduled. The only problem now was the earliest appointment was 11:20 Pacific Time which for us was 12:20 Mountain time. The kicker was we couldn’t leave our hotel. There was no continuing to drive and stop along the road. We had to be at the hotel. This messed up our plans for the day.

You are probably wondering why we needed covid tests that are required by the government, it is because we aren’t vaccinated. They do it as a precaution even though you need to have a negative test before entering Canada. If we didn’t comply with this requirement we would get in some serious trouble.

To kill the time till our virtual appointment, we went down for breakfast at the hotel, moved our check out time back two hours and watched Love it or List it on HGTV. Finally got our covid test virtual appointment taken care of. Pretty much someone just watched you to make sure you did it correctly. The main difference between this one and the one we took in PA was we had to swap our cheeks and nose. Kinda weird sticking something wet up your nose.

By noon we were able to hit the road for the most part. We had one last stop before leaving Edmonton. We had to drop off our covid tests at a designated location. Thankful it wasn’t far from our hotel or where we got on the highway.

    Railroad Bridge

Now we kept driving and driving. Thankfully Northern Alberta isn’t as flat as very other state and provice we have driven through. And just like that we are out of the big hard wood trees. Just birches and pines. Going to miss those big trees. After some time we stop to fuel up at a very nice shell. Also picked up a nice hot dinner this time. No gas station sandwiches tonight. We upgraded to chicken tenders and potato wedges.

We continued to drive through Northern Alberta we pass through several small towns, well technically counties. Grand Prairie was Alberta’s first county. Then there was Beaverlodge Alberta that had a massive Beaver in the center of the town.

    Beaverlodge, Alberta

Instead of continuing to listen to Spotify, we decided to find some Canadian radio stations. We noticed right away that there is a lot of country stations. Canadain country is very interesting. Most of the songs are about drinking at a bar. As we drove the road became so bumpy that I would try to take a picture of the view and couldn’t. Good luck drinking anything and not spilling all over yourself.

    Trees for Miles

By 7 o’clock we hit British Columbia! Only one provice left to cross into before Alaska. Now we are on Pacific time, so for everyone in PA we are three hours behind. Shortly after crossing into BC we reached Dawson Creek, Mile Zero City Where Adventure Begins. This is where we hit the final highway we drive on. The famous Alaskan highway! As we continued to drive for miles and miles, well technically kilometers since we are in metric the rocky mountains got closer and closer. Hopefully tomorrow we can se more of them.

    Final Highway!

We continued driving to the town we would stop for the night. Eventually we saw two moose in the distance and plenty of deer in fields and along the road. On the side of road there are lots of small billboards. Mainly to to tell you what is in the town but also to give you important information. Like how from October to April all vehicles are required to have snow tires. Which we do have so don’t worry about that.

    Day 4 Sunset

A beautiful sunset welcomed us into Fort St. John, where we would be spending the night. Tonight was an early night, we got to our hotel at 7. For eastern time that was 10. Since it was an early night we watched a little TV. This time it was Impractical Jokers. Today wasn’t a big mileage day. In total we drove 428 miles.

  • March 28

Remember that tire mishap from yesterday, well we tried to get it fixed first thing this morning but that didn’t work out. Was told the garages didn’t open until 7. So we waited and waited. 7:45 rolls around and the shop gave us a call. He was running late due to a fire alarm that morning and would be to our location in 45 minutes. So to kill time, we decided to make coffee. We first tried to use the electric tea kettle in the truck outlet. Quickly learned the truck can’t handle the amps needed for the kettle. So, I stood outside next to the outlet to plug your vehicle in over the winter. And we made instant coffee. Only problem was I burnt my mouth and tongue so bad. So I said no to having anymore coffee.

Now we wait for the service guy. Around 9 o’clock the service guy. Within 15 minutes the new tire was installed and we were on the road again. Since our hotel didn’t have breakfast we ate breakfast on the road.

    Banana Bread To Go

As we continued to travel through North Dakota, we noticed that as we saw more trees we knew that there was a house around that area.

Canada! We arrived at the border around 10:45. It is not an experience I need have again. It was the most nerve wracking time ever. We were both extremely anxious the entire time. At the border, we thought we would have smooth sailing. We gave our passports, showed our negative covid tests, paperwork for the guns and paperwork stating Benjamin had a job. Seemed like everything was going well but then he asked us to pull up to a garage door. Talk about anxiety going through the roof. So we pull off and pull into this building and our hearts sank. They were going to search our truck and trailer. We also had paperwork to fill out because of covid and moving to Alaska.

So we get out of the truck. Give the guns to one of the officers to make sure the serial numbers match what was on the paperwork. Then we left the truck and trailer to go fill out paperwork in the office. As we sat and worried and sat some more. We really hoped they didn’t search the trailer. We had it packed just right and it was driving nicely. Didn’t want to attempt to recreate it. In the office we explained why we are trying to get through Canada to get to Alaska. Within an hour we had the okay to continue traveling. We were informed that we had to take another Covid test within 24 hours after crossing. We got everything we needed and we’re escorted back to our truck. We got in and an officer told us how to get out. Upon further inspection as we left we determined they only searched the back seat of the truck. By 11:45 we started driving into Canada!

    Happy to be in Canada!

By 12:10 we hit another time zone which changed the time back to 11:10. We are now in mountain time, 2 hours behind PA. Then we started to see more snow. We kept driving and driving, Saskatchewan was flat just like every other state we traveled through. Right before we crossed into Alberta, we stopped for dinner in Lloydsville. We quickly realized that we hadn’t eaten yet all day. So we grabbed some gas station sandwiches and gassed up. At this point we had about 2 hours left of driving till we got to where we wanted to end at. So we kept trucking along.

    Dinner to go!

After crossing into Alberta it started to flurry. The flurries were small, but didn’t last the entire drive. Kept coming and going. We finally ended our day in Edmonton Alberta. Once in the hotel, we tried to schedule our virtual covid test that is required by the government. We tried and tried but couldn’t get it to work so we decided to wait till the morning. In total today we drove 715 miles and made it into Canada!

  • March 27

We started our drive nice and early. The goal is to drive 850 miles, ending up in North Dakota and only have an hour of driving till the boarder. Just because of not knowing how long it will take to get through the border.

Beautiful Sunrise to Start the Day

Not long into the drive we crossed into Wisconsin. Four states down. Three more to go! First thing we noticed was the price of gas. For everyone in PA you will be wishing gas was this cheap, the cheapest gas we saw was $3.79 a gallon. Super thankful for that price when we are filling up every 200ish miles.

    Cool Rocks in Wisconsin

The very beginning of Wisconsin was cool. Lots of different rock formations and passed Camp Douglas. Fun fact: Wisconsin has cranberry farms. One town has a cranberry festival in September. We crossed the Saint Croix River which was still mostly frozen and entered Minnesota. Another state down!

    Lunch on the Road

About an hour and a half into Minnesota we were officially under 3000 miles till North Pole. Yay! Not much else to note about Minnesota. I took a nap due to being so bored with nothing to look at. One interesting thing is that State Troopers have maroon cars. By 3 o’clock we reached North Dakota. Last state before the border!

Once again everything was flat. You could see for miles with the except of the occasional rolling hills. The one thing to look at was the size of the feed mills and grain bins. I still can’t belive how big they were. Some are designed to have the railcars come right under and have the feed drop down. The trains that run in North Dakota aren’t small ones. We saw one that all we could see was the end. Couldn’t quite see the beginning.

    Trains for Miles

The drive was going smoothly. We were well on track to get to Portal, North Dakota by night fall. To be ready to cross the border right away. Until we needed gas. We could have used a gas can in the bed of the truck but decided to play it safe and stop. That is when things took a turn. The lot was gravel and a small stone piece punctured the one trailer tire just enough that we had a slow leak. Tired to see if an auto shop was open to put a new tire. Everything was closed, expect we got lucky and found a tractor supply. They weren’t able to fix if and didn’t have the right tire. But they did have tire slime. So we purchased it and tired to use it to temporarily fix the hole. Turns out we got the one for truck tires not trailer tires. So Benjamin ran back in and got the trailer tire slime. Got it to work enough to patch the hole and limp along.

At this point we hadn’t eaten dinner and weren’t sure if the patch would hold. I got in contact with uHaul to see if they could have someone come out and put a new tire on. Since we were still driving they needed us to find a place to stop at. We decided it was best to call it a night and find a hotel. We stopped at Minot, North Dakota. Our hope was to have someone that uHaul found to come out tonight to fix the tire. But because everyone was closed, nobody would come out. So we decided to just have someone come out first thing to fix it. Today didn’t got as planned. Only got 800 miles in but it is all part of the adventure.
